Description: I have been adopted and now have a lovely new home! This game comes in a traditional Rosewood box with Mar Cheuk clearly painted on the front. Mah Jong has been known by many names through the ages - in essence the name "Mar Cheuk" refers to "sparrows" - basically the "Game of Sparrows". This box has a raised cornice under the top handles and looks quite classy. The drawers are a simple style but work well. Other names for & linked to Mah Jong include: Ma Jong, Mah Deuck, Mah Jong, Mah Jongg, Ching Chong, Mah Lowe, Man Chu, Mah Diao, Ma Chong, Mah Chong, Pung Chow, Kong Chow, Mah Cheuk, Ma Chiang, Pe Ling, Lung Chan, Baak Ling, Chinese Game of Four Winds, The Ancient Game of the Mandarins, The Ancient Game of China, and Ma Jiang. Take a look at the detailed flower tiles - there are 2 complete bouquets each numbered 1-4. And the flower tiles denote writing instruments and writing materials and parchments. In addition to the wonderful one bamboo all the remaining bamboo tiles are the sought after "column" style. Because of the "complex" style character tiles this game is likely from the late 1940's perhaps very early 1950"s. There are a total of 152 tiles with a bone to bamboo ratio "40/60" - 40% bone and 60% bamboo. 152 tiles means this game has all its original tiles (144 playing tiles + 4 spares). Added to these 148 tiles are 4 matching tiles that have been stickered for use as jokers. Because of the added tiles this game can be played with using National Mah Jong League (NMJL) or traditional Chinese rules - the best of both worlds! My Mahj group has totally enjoyed playing with this game for the past few years and I hope someone will love and play with it as much as we have. With the addition of the extra tiles this game can be played with right out of the box - whatever your style of play. Let me know if I can help with any more information.
